Week of 10-28-13
Events for this week:
Stranger Danger talk with Officer Buckley will be on Tuesday the 29th. Officer Buckley has been going to classrooms teaching kids about safety and strangers. Halloween tends to lend itself to this sort of discussion, they also discuss Halloween safety tips such as carrying a flash light and going with an adult.
Halloween Parade is at 2:45pm on the 31st! Students wear their costumes for the parade. No masks are allowed. The class will change into their costumes before the parade so please put costumes in a plastic bag to help facilitate the wardrobe change.

- Match voice to print with one-to-one matching by finger pointing
- Use picture clues to help tell the story and to help decode unkown words (very important as text becomes more difficult)
- Locate some known and unknown words
- Use pattern and repetition of text to read
- Retelling the story
- Use some letter sounds (beginning/ending)
- Begin to use know, high-frequency words while reading

Snapshot of this week October 7th -11th
Reminder that Picture Day is Wednesday October 9th!!
**Library books are due every Tuesday!**
We are in full swing now and the students are doing great! They have adjusted well to a full schedule. They really seem to enjoy the WYNN time and working in small literacy groups.
**Just a reminder to read every night with them and check their literacy bags to see if they have an activity or book to practice. Every bag should have sight words in it to practice as well.
ABC Mouse
The class was introduced to ABC Mouse today in computers. I will be sending home a parent sheet with information on how to log in and activate your account.
Phonics
We are working mainly with lowercase letters. Lowercase letters appear much more than uppercase in print, therefore a good grasp of lowercase letters and their phonetic sounds lends itself to reading success.
In Writer's Workshop students are beginning to create multi page stories about topics they have knowledge of. Some examples are their families, pets, sports, school, and different interests. As writers they are learning that pictures need to match their words and that the pages all have to be about the same story. They are also attempting to stretch their words out to try to find multiple sounds.
Starting this week I am asking the students to only use an uppercase letter for the first letter of their name. The rest of their name should be lowercase letters. Some lowercase letters are a little more difficult to form than others so we are really trying to practice our letter formations.
We are beginning Reader's Workshop this week as well. We are making a chart of what "readers" do. We are also exploring the Titles of books and how the pages of a story match the title.
Math
We are working on writing numerals 1-5 and putting them into sequential order. We are also working on the decomposition of numbers by breaking them into 2 parts, thus touching upon number sentences.
Science
We have been working on the Five Senses and are going to begin talking about weather.
Social Studies
We are going to begin learning/reviewing our street address and also our phone numbers. You can help by practicing phone numbers and addresses at home. This is part of our social studies unit, All About Me & My Family.

Raz-kids Interactive Reading Tool
Today in computers the class was introduced to Raz-kids. It is an interactive reading tool for our students to practice reading fluency and comprehension. The students can listen to a story, read a story and then take a comprehension quiz. Each child earns points or stars to use for their RAZ Rocket which allows them to buy things for their rocket. Enjoy reading!

Library Books Due Tuesday, September 24th
The class took home library books on Tuesday of last week. They were all very excited to check out books for the first time! They are due back this Tuesday the 24th. I will collect the library books from them that morning. If they want bring books back sooner I can hold on to them in the classroom until our Library day.

Hello Parents/Guardians of Room 32
Here is a sneak peak of what we will be doing this week:
September 16th-20th
Phonics:
We are continuing to work on rhyming and learning new poems each week. After we learn new poems we add them to the students binders where they can practice reading them.
This week we are exploring letters. We have been using magnetic letters to sort letters based on shape and have also been putting letters together to make words. We have been exploring the different letters in each other's names and trying to distinguish the different sounds each letter makes. I will be sending home a letter with different activities you can do with your child at home using magnetic letters.
We are also learning how to write the letter R this week using the verbal pathways I handed out in the back to school packets.
Writing:
We have been writing stories about things we know. I am encouraging them to try the beginning sounds of words. For those more comfortable with the writing process I am trying to teach them how to stretch their words to try to hear more sounds when writing. Later this week we will talk about writing about topics that are difficult for us to draw. Many children are shying away from topics because they don't know how to draw it perfectly so later this week we will have a writing lesson that addresses this.
Math:
As you could see from the homework math has been mainly about grouping and sorting objects. This week we begin to show how numbers can be represented in multiple ways. We have also begun practicing writing our numbers 0-5, using the verbal pathways that were in the back to school packets.
Homework:
I sent home a packet of homework tonight. As I explained at Back - to - School night, it isn't due until Friday.
Socially the class is doing very well. They are adjusting well to a full day program and all the new routines. As a whole they are really learning how to work as a team, share materials and take turns talking and listening. I am really trying to foster a classroom environment in which all students feel safe and respected.
